This marvellous and uncontaminated 3.600-kilometres island on the Gulf of Aden is situated 500 km from the Yemeni coast.

Socotra is unique island which opened to tourism only recently.

The island offers a surprising variety of natural beauties: mountain overlooking the sea, plains covered with palm trees and cane-brackets, beaches, limestone plateaux and deep ravines.

On the island visitors can find unique animal and vegetables species that give Socotra a primordial look. More than 800 species of plants have been classified; the most famous the Dragon Blood Tree whose name is derived from the fact that carving its trunk it pours out a red resin.

According to ancient beliefs, this was the blood of the dragon. In addition there are 140 known species of birds registered here and every year more are added to the list.

The centre island and its coasts are under the protection of the Yemen Conservation and Development Authority that declared the island “a natural protected area” and, in collaboration with the Yemeni Tourism Authority, produce a guide for eco tourism.

The 35.000 inhabitants of the island are friendly and very hospitable; they have their own culture and language.

The coasts are crowded with fisherman, mainly of African origin. The island of Socotra is a real Eden for sea lovers. In the deep water more than 800 different species of coral have been classified together with thousand of fish and shellfish.

The water are especially wonderful for snorkelling because of the numerous fish species and corals
